Once again, a late goal resulted in Newcastle United suffering defeat in the Premier League. Last time around, it was Kai Havertz who scored the winner for Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. And this time, it was Alex Iwobi winning it for Everton by finding the back of the net deep into additional time in the second half. That means that The Magpies have lost back-to-back games, and it could certainly have an effect on the momentum that they had built up.

Eddie Howe’s side had been one of the most in-form teams in Europe in 2022 before these disappointing results on the trot. Now, they find themselves in need of a win, as Newcastle United would not want to get dragged back into a relegation battle.

It was a huge result for Frank Lampard’s team on the other hand, who absolutely needed to get a win on this occasion.

In many ways, this was a six-pointer of a game and The Toffees got the better of The Magpies on this occasion, despite not being the better team on the night. And now, Howe has a few things to worry about.

Newcastle United handed worry by defeat against Everton

There is no need to panic at Newcastle United. Their brilliant run of form leading up to the game means that they have a bit of a cushion.

But after back-to-back defeats, Howe will know that his team will need to get a win in the near future. Things can change very quickly in football. This Newcastle United side are proof of that, having gone from relegation battlers to top 10 contenders in the space of a couple of months. Now, they must make sure that they don’t head back in the opposite direction.

If Everton win their couple of games in hand, they would be level on points with Newcastle United after 29 matches.

On top of everything else, Newcastle United have a very difficult run of fixtures coming up, with games against Tottenham Hotspur, Wolves, Leicester City, Manchester City, Arsenal and Liverpool still to be played, as well as potential six-pointers against Norwich City and Burnley.

A win against Everton would have almost guaranteed safety for The Magpies. Now, there is still work to be done.
