Spain international asked about Newcastle United return
Newcastle United have already made a splash in the recent January transfer window and it is safe to say that it has paid dividends. At one point this season, The Magpies had looked destined for relegation but now, they are one of the most in-form teams in Europe right now and the incredible run that Eddie Howe’s side have been on over the past few months appears to have secured their place in the English top flight.
Unless something very unexpected happens, they look set to remain in the Premier League. And one would expect Newcastle United to make several more additions to their squad in the summer as their next target has to be to compete for an European spot.
Thus, do not be surprised to see many new faces at the club next season. But could their be an opportunity to bring back a familiar one as well?
Mikel Merino was recently asked about a potential return to Newcastle United. And as reported by Chronicle Live, the Real Sociedad midfielder said:
"“Newcastle was great for me. I have good memories but, right now, I’m focused on the present.“I think it’s the right thing to do because when you’re focusing on your future and what you are going to do, you lose focus on your present. If you want your future to be bright, you have to give your best in the day to day.“I’m only looking forward to help my team, to improve myself. I’m sure if I do that in the future, good things will come.”"
Merino responds to question about Newcastle United return
It is safe to say that the situation at Newcastle United is much different right now than it was when Merino had left the club.
He had initially joined Newcastle United on loan from Borussia Dortmund but the move would be made permanent soon. The Spaniard would be gone the following season though, joining Real Sociedad.
There, he has enjoyed a wonderful time and has established himself in the Spanish national team. Still only 25 years of age though, could a return to the Premier League lie in his future?
Only time shall tell but it must be said that someone of Merino’s quality could be a solid addition to this current Newcastle United squad, who are flying under the management of Howe.
