Newcastle United’s recent run of form has been up there with the best teams in Europe right now and as a result, it looks like they are now almost certain to stay up in the Premier League. Not many could have predicted that a few months back though, when The Magpies looked almost certain to drop down to the Championship. But a strong January transfer window has done the trick for them.

Eddie Howe, as well as the players, deserve immense credit for the turnaround that they have enjoyed this year and right now, it does not feel unrealistic for them to finish the campaign in the top 10.

The club’s next step must be to win an European spot and with that goal in mind, one would expect them to make a splash in the summer as well.

And it looks like the club might have their eyes set on a Benfica superstar. As reported by i, Darwin Nunez is a prime target for Newcastle United. It may take a transfer fee close to £60 million to sign him though. Manchester United are also being linked with the striker.

Can Newcastle United sign Nunez from Benfica?

It goes without saying that Nunez is enjoying a brilliant campaign this time around and is one of the most highly-rated young strikers in the world at the moment, and understandably so.

According to stats from Transfermarkt, Nunez has scored 26 goals in 33 appearances for Benfica this season.

And he has proven himself to be a man for the big moment as well, most recently scoring the winner in the second leg against Ajax in the Champions League, which sent Benfica into the quarter-finals of the competition.

Also, at 22 years of age, one would expect Nunez to get a lot better moving forward. Thus, someone like him has the potential to be an incredible signing for Newcastle United.
