Newcastle United are planning a very ambitious move for Chelsea defender Antonio Rudiger, who could be available on a free transfer this summer.

Antonio Rudiger could be set to leave Chelsea when his contract expires at the end of the season. And Newcastle United are said to be in the race for his signature. This is being reported by the Telegraph, who add that Newcastle’s ambitious new owners are ready to compete with the likes of Real Madrid and Manchester United for the signature of Rudiger.

Rudiger has established himself as one of the top defenders in the English Premier League in recent seasons. He helped Chelsea win the UEFA Champions League last year, and has been a regular starter for them this season.

Signing the 29 year old would be a statement of intent from Newcastle United, who added the likes of Kieran Trippier and Bruno Guimarães to their squad in the January transfer window. The Magpies will aim to compete for a top seven finish next season, and the potential arrival of Rudiger could be a major boost to their hopes of qualifying for European football.

Newcastle United have also been linked with a move for LOSC Lille centre-back Sven Botman, but he now appears likely to join AC Milan. SC Freiburg’s Nico Schlotterbeck and Sevilla’s Diego Carlos have also attracted the interest of Eddie Howe’s side.

But Rudiger is a much more established player than the above mentioned trio and would instantly bolster the Newcastle defence. It will be interesting to see just how much truth there is to this rumour. But signing the German international would certainly present a major coup for Newcastle.
