Newcastle United set to open contract talks with Fabian Schar

Fabian Schar could be in line for a new contract with Newcastle United, with Eddie Howe confirming that they will hold talks with his agent very soon.
Fabian Schar has established himself as a very important player for Newcastle United since joining the club in 2018 from Deportivo La Coruña. The 30 year old has proven to be one of the club’s best bargain buys in recent years. But with his contract set to expire at the end of the season there are fears that Newcastle could lose him on a free transfer in the summer.
Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe eased some of those fears on Friday, as he confirmed that they will be holding talks with Schar’s agent very shortly. Speaking at his pre-match press conference ahead of the game against Brighton and Hove Albion, Howe said:
"“Fabian is someone I’ve always admired. A really good footballing centre-back. The most important thing is that he’s defended very well. Again, he’s another one who’s trained very well. We’re aware of his contract situation. We’ll be sitting down and discussing things with his agent very shortly.”"
Schar found playing time hard to come by under Steve Bruce earlier this season. But he broke into the starting XI in November and hasn’t looked back since. The Switzerland international has been crucial to the Magpies’ recent defensive improvements.
It will be interesting to see if Newcastle United can manage to keep hold of Schar beyond the end of the season. But with defensive target Sven Botman now seemingly set to join AC Milan, extending Schar’s contract has become even more important for the club.
Schar will be looking to continue his impressive run of form on Saturday as Newcastle United take on Brighton and Hove Albion in the English Premier League.
