It’s no surprise that Newcastle United have struggled vs. the top Premier League clubs since their successful times in the early 2000s. That poor form vs. elite opposition absolutely includes Liverpool, who have dominated Newcastle in recent years.
In the last 15 fixtures between the clubs, all coming in Premier League play, Newcastle United have only won twice. That has dropped their all-time record vs. the Reds to 50 wins, 43 draws, and 87 losses.
Newcastle’s most recent win in the series came in 2015 when they benefitted from an own goal and a goal from current Liverpool midfielder Gini Wijnaldum in a 2-0 victory. The year prior, Ayoze Perez provided the lone score in a 1-0 NUFC win.
In December, Newcastle secured a scoreless draw at home. Karl Darlow made four big saves and Fabian Schar had a second-half clearance off the goalline to shut out Liverpool. It was a surprising result at the time due to recent struggles from Newcastle and the high-scoring attack of Liverpool.
Newcastle United have only won two of their last 15 matches vs. Liverpool.
Before that scoreless stalemate in December, Newcastle had lost six straight matches vs. the Reds. In those consecutive defeats, Liverpool scored 15 goals while Newcastle only mustered four. After playing the Reds close in the second match of the 2018-19 season, NUFC suffered two 3-1 defeats last season.
This weekend, Steve Bruce and the Magpies will look to reverse that trend against a potentially distracted Liverpool club.
As a manager, Bruce has faced Liverpool 28 times. In those matches, his club carries a 6-10-12 record with him never beating Jurgen Klopp in their three encounters. Klopp’s only loss vs. Newcastle was the match in December 2015.
