Newcastle United have another chance to control their own destiny tomorrow when they face Brighton and Hove Albion. The Magpies have struggled for results vs. their relegation rivals, but is tomorrow the day they finally help themselves out in their quest for EPL safety?

Player to Watch

Newcastle United: Ryan Fraser

When Allan Saint-Maximin, Miguel Almiron, and Callum Wilson all went out, Fraser was the first name that most Newcastle fans thought of to step up in their absences. He picked up an assist vs. Wolves, but his product in the final third has often not been good enough. The former Bournemouth man needs to be at his best tomorrow to help NUFC pick up three points.

Brighton and Hove Albion: Neal Maupay

In the reverse fixture earlier this season, Maupay finished with two goals and one assist in the 3-0 win for the Seagulls over NUFC. He hasn’t scored since mid-January and Newcastle won’t want him to get his confidence back in front of goal against them.

NUFC Availability Update

Speaking to the media, Steve Bruce indicated that it’s still too soon for Fabian Schar and Callum Wilson. But, he did indicate that Miguel Almiron has a chance for tomorrow. He added that Jacob Murphy made an impact last week and gives the club a different option with his pace and directness.

Keys to a Newcastle United Victory

  • The return of Miguel Almiron

It’s obviously not a certainty that Miggy returns, but if he does, it’s a huge boost for the Magpies. Even at less than 100%, he’s a gamechanger for the club and would provide some life into an attack that’s been lacking in these winnable matches.

  • USE A STRIKER

Without Wilson, Bruce tried to get creative and play Almiron as a false nine to help create offense. But, he’s stuck with that system for the most part without Almiron and it’s been a disaster. Last week saw the Newcastle boss use Dwight Gayle, a striker, on the wing and Ryan Fraser, a winger, in the middle of the attack for a large chunk of the match. He is stubborn about changing his tactics, but he needs to start either Gayle, Joelinton, or potentially Andy Carroll as a target man from the opening whistle.

  • More offense from the full-backs

The starters on the flanks of the backline for the last two matches have been Paul Dummett and Emil Krafth. Neither player is known for their attacking ability and without the main players in the attack, that’s limited Newcastle’s danger going forward. Bruce should bench both players and start Javier Manquillo and either Jamal Lewis or even Matt Ritchie opposite him.

  • A draw isn’t good enough

Yes, a draw is better than a loss and Newcastle are playing away. But, now is the time in the relegation battle where the Magpies need victories, especially against a fellow relegation rival. Bruce needs to have his club play with a higher sense of urgency and go for all three points.
