Recent history tells Newcastle fans what result to expect vs. Aston Villa

Sitting just one point ahead of Fulham and Brighton and Hove Albion, Newcastle United desperately need to get a win on Friday vs. Aston Villa. But, the recent results vs. Villa say that this will be a tough match to come away from with three points.

Villa were promoted back into the Premier League following the 2018-19 Championship season when they beat Derby County in the playoff final. Since then, they have played Newcastle United three times.

In those three EPL fixtures, Newcastle have zero wins. In November 2019, Steve Bruce’s return to Villa Park after being sacked in 2018 saw Aston Villa comfortably defeat his Magpies, 2-0. It was an uninspired performance from NUFC.

The second matchup last season came after Project Restart and ended in a 1-1 draw. Dwight Gayle scored the opener at St. James’ Park before Ahmed Elmohamady equalized in the 83rd minute.

Recent history between Newcastle United and Aston Villa doesn’t bode well for the Magpies.

This season, Aston Villa contributed to Newcastle’s lengthy winless run through the winter. Two defensive miscues cost NUFC in a 2-0 away defeat.

Before this three-match winless streak in the series, Newcastle United actually had a run of dominance vs. Villa. From September 2011 to February 2017, Newcastle did not lose a match to the Lions. They won six of the 12 matchups across the Premier League and Championship.

Newcastle United carry the all-time series edge with 71 wins, 57 losses, and 38 draws since the clubs first met in 1895.

According to Transfermarkt, Steve Bruce carries a losing record vs. Villa, who he managed from 2016-2018. He’s only won eight of the 27 matches and has lost 12. If he wants to keep his current club afloat, he will need to defeat Aston Villa for the first time as the Newcastle boss.
