Injuries are definitely a part of sports, but Newcastle United and the Premier League have been hit especially hard by players being out this season. While the Magpies are towards the bottom of the Premier League table, they find themselves near the top of this EPL statistic.

Sky Sports put out an article citing information from PremierInjuries.com regarding how many days clubs have been missing players due to injury or illness. Newcastle United land third on that list behind only Liverpool and Crystal Palace.

Newcastle players have lost 760 days to injury or illness this season. Allan Saint-Maximin, now out until April, has accumulated a lot of those between injuries and his COVID-19 absence.

When it comes to current injured players, Newcastle are in a tie for fourth with seven. Liverpool and Palace are equal at the top of the list with nine apiece. With those current injuries for Newcastle, the number of days lost will continue to rise.

Currently 17th on the EPL table, Newcastle United are a top three club in a negative statistical category.

Obviously, all injuries are not created equal. Newcastle United missing their top three attacking options is different than another club missing some rotational pieces. Liverpool’s defense has had even worse injury luck than the Newcastle attack and they’ve struggled as a result of it.

If they are going to survive this season in the Premier League, Newcastle will need to overcome some major absences and get some results from other clubs to go their way. While every club is dealing with an increase in players being out this season, Newcastle United’s lack of quality depth has left them hamstrung, pun intended, when it comes to the “next man up” attitude.
