Newcastle fans are overreacting about this player’s form vs. Wolves
Newcastle United had a second-half lead before conceding an equalizer and finishing the match level. Obviously, injuries forcing all three substitutions was a key factor in the defeat, but there were also some missed chances by the Magpies.
One player that had a notable miss was Joelinton. After Jacob Murphy slalomed through the Wolves’ defense, he played a ball in front of goal to the Brazilian forward, but his shot was too far in the middle of the goal and was kept out by Rui Patricio and Romain Saiss.
This Is Futbol highlighted the reaction to Joelinton’s performance from the Newcastle fans. Some equated him to a semi-pro player or that playing with him is like having ten players on the pitch.
Should he have converted at that moment? Of course. Is it fair to expect better from your favorite club’s record-signing? Absolutely.
Newcastle United fans overreact to Joelinton’s performance vs. Wolves.
But, there are times that Joelinton becomes an unfairly easy target for the Toon Army. Joe Willock had a miss in a similar situation in the first half. Miguel Almiron hit the post as he got in alone behind the defense. Misses happen in soccer and those players obviously contribute in other parts of the pitch. But, they didn’t get anywhere near the criticism that Big Joe got.
While he’s been exponentially better as the Newcastle striker than Joelinton, Callum Wilson had some big misses in a nine-match stretch without a goal from the run of play in EPL action. Yet, he almost entirely dodged this energy from supporters.
Without Wilson, Joelinton must step up, whether he’s playing as the striker or on the wing. But, it’s important for fans to be slightly fair to the much-maligned number nine.
