Newcastle should keep tabs on this promising American striker
For years before the 2020-21 season, Newcastle United searched for a first-choice striker. Salomon Rondon had a positive spell on loan, but the club struggled with their signings outside of him. Obviously, Callum Wilson has turned that around and will be the starting striker whenever he’s healthy.
But, the players below him on the depth chart (Andy Carroll, Dwight Gayle, and Joelinton) have struggled to make an impact when Wilson’s not available. While there aren’t any moves that can be made to help during his long-term absence this season, Newcastle should pursue this young striker to add to the group.
20-year-old Daryl Dike is currently on loan with the Championship’s Barnsley FC from Major League Soccer’s Orlando City SC. Yesterday, in his fourth appearance for the club, he scored the second goal in Barnsley’s win over Stoke City.
2020 marked Dike’s rookie season after an accolade-filled career at the University of Virginia. His first season with Orlando City saw him score eight goals and add three assists. He earned the MLS Rookie of the Year award.
This young American striker should be on Newcastle United’s radar.
Dike received his first call-up to the United States men’s national team last year and got his first cap earlier in 2021. His sister, Courtney, played for Nigeria at the 2015 FIFA World Cup.
Barnsley do reportedly have an option to buy Dike after his loan spell expires, but Newcastle should absolutely keep tabs on him and his situation. His price tag wouldn’t be too high and he clearly has high upside. With his youth, natural goalscoring ability, and physical gifts, he would be a valuable addition to the Magpies’ roster.
