Throughout any Premier League season, clubs have to adjust to injuries and inconsistency. For Newcastle United, who battled with an outbreak of COVID-19 and a rotating door of injured players, they’ve been forced to rely on players out of position or deep on the depth chart. Now, another unexpected player could be filling a key role for the club.
Javier Manquillo was forced to exit Newcastle’s win vs. Southampton in the first half due to a leg injury. With Steve Bruce mentioning that it could be an ankle ligament issue, it’s fair to assume he will miss some time.
Typically, the NUFC boss could turn to DeAndre Yedlin to fill in for the injured Manquillo. But, he plays for Galatasaray now after leaving last week. In less than a full week, Newcastle’s depth at right-back has been depleted in a big way. Without Javi or Yedlin, it will be Emil Krafth that is likely handed the starting job at right-back.
The Swedish international has made six Premier League appearances this season, including four starts. He’s currently the only true right-back outside of Manquillo with Jacob Murphy available as a converted winger.
The good news for Newcastle United is that Krafth has looked much more comfortable in his second season with the club. In 2019-20, he looked overwhelmed and out of his depth in the Premier League. But, he is now a serviceable option on the right flank.
While he has improved, Krafth is still not on the same level as Manquillo and the fans will be hoping the first-choice option returns sooner than later. Until then, it will likely be Krafth getting penciled into the starting XI.
