Ding dong, the slump is dead! After going winless in 11 matches across all competitions, Newcastle United have finally tasted victory. Callum Wilson scored twice in the second half to give the Magpies a massive three points.

Newcastle United came ready to play at Goodison Park today. We didn’t see the ultra-defensive Magpies, but rather, it was a nice balanced side that stayed responsible defensively while also holding some of possession and creating chances. Full credit to Steve Bruce and his staff, including newcomer Graeme Jones, because the club played with urgency today and did well to break out of the slump on the road vs. a quality opponent.

Miguel Almiron turned in a great performance for Newcastle. He flew all around the pitch, either creating chances with his passing, driving the ball forward, or tracking back into his own box defensively. He hounded James Rodriguez and made things difficult and frustrating for the Colombian star.

Jonjo Shelvey found Wilson on a corner kick for the opening strike. The headed goal was Wilson was lovely and from a considerable distance. Then, he was able to convert on a counter-attack, from a pinpoint assist from Jamal Lewis, in stoppage time to ease the nerves of the Toon Army and secure the three points.

Newcastle United outshot Everton, 13-11, and built on the momentum of the second half vs. Leeds United. Just like that mid-week matchup, Allan Saint-Maximin provided a boost again off the bench, picking up the hockey assist on Wilson’s second goal after springing Lewis down the flank.

With the victory, the Magpies have taken the double vs. Everton for the first time since the 2001-02 Premier League season.
