In Sheffield United’s first year back in the Premier League, Newcastle United outscored the Blades, 5-0, in the two matchups.

Newcastle United will try to bounce back after their FA Cup loss when they face Sheffield United on Tuesday. While they are winless this season, the Blades had a better-than-expected 2019-20 campaign, finishing 9th on the table. But, Newcastle managed to take all six points in two comfortable wins vs. Chris Wilder’s side.

Newcastle became the first club since Sheffield was in League One to defeat the club at Bramall Lane by two or more goals. Allan Saint-Maximin headed home a cross from Javi Manquillo to give a first-half lead.

In the second half, Andy Carroll headed the ball to Jonjo Shelvey near mid-pitch as the midfielder charged towards goal. Thinking the play would be stopped for offside, Sheffield’s defenders essentially let Shelvey go and he was able to beat Dean Henderson for the goal. By rule, the flag rightfully stayed down to allow the play to continue and VAR confirmed that there was no offside on the play.

In their first match back after the league was shutdown for three months due to Covid-19, Newcastle United overcame some rust to blow past the Blades.

For the second time last season, Saint-Maximin, wearing his trademark Gucci headband, scored vs. Sheffield United. Matt Ritchie and Joelinton followed his lead. It was a quality performance from the Brazilian, who was also able to draw two yellow card fouls on John Egan within the first 50 minutes.
