With Newcastle United’s star striker in a rough patch, Callum Wilson needs to get his confidence back.
The beginning of Callum Wilson’s tenure with Newcastle United rightfully earned praise and excitement from supporters. Through his first seven Premier League matches of the season, Wilson had six goals and an assist.
But, the former Bournemouth man has hit a rough patch. His last goal from the run of play came in November against Crystal Palace. He scored a penalty against Fulham, but it’s been six matches in all competitions since that strike vs. Palace.
While some of those matches in that stretch saw Newcastle play ultra-defensively and leave him isolated, Wilson’s been a little bit off his game. He’s missed some quality chances and has been caught offside more than before.
For Wilson, all it might take to get back on track would be seeing the ball go into the net once. It doesn’t need to be a world-class strike from distance. Wilson would benefit from tapping one in from short-range just to get that groove back.
His eight EPL goals lead the club by a comfortable margin as Jeff Hendrick sits second with two goals. Newcastle United have struggled for production from their strikers in recent years and Wilson is vital to the club’s success. NUFC have not lost a match this season in which Wilson has scored.
Next up for Newcastle United is an FA Cup matchup vs. Arsenal, followed by a Premier League matchup vs. winless Sheffield United. Wilson should definitely have some chances to break out of his mini-slump and start scoring goals again for the Magpies.
