Now fit, can Dubravka win back his place from Darlow at Newcastle?

Karl Darlow has taken the first-choice keeper job with both hands. Can Martin Dubravka re-establish himself as Newcastle United’s starter?

Against Liverpool, Martin Dubravka was included in Newcastle United’s matchday squad for the first time this season. He has been working his way back after a heel injury and an extended recovery time. When it was announced that he would miss the start of the season, supporters were nervous about trusting Karl Darlow. But, he has impressed thus far.

Now that both are healthy, the question will be if Dubravka can reclaim his spot in the starting lineup from the expectation-exceeding Darlow.

There are certainly arguments to be made on both sides. For Dubravka, he’s been the more proven star in the Premier League. Since he arrived at the club, there never would be a discussion of starting Darlow ahead of him. Obviously, if both players entered this season fully fit, Dubravka would’ve started and there wouldn’t have been any doubt about it.

But, Darlow has snatched his chance after Dubravka was out to start the campaign. He’s been excellent this season and the club wouldn’t have as many points as they do without him. Look at the draw vs. Liverpool, if Darlow didn’t make some big stops, Newcastle would have lost.

From Steve Bruce’s perspective, this is a good problem to have. You’d always prefer to have two great goalkeepers to choose from rather than being stuck with one or even zero. It will be a situation to monitor as Newcastle United advances deeper into the season. But, I wouldn’t expect Darlow to give up his spot anytime soon.
