Newcastle United could target one of these three defenders in the January transfer window.

The January transfer window is officially open to kick-off 2021. While Newcastle United are not expected to be a major player in the market, there is one position that seems likely to be addressed this month.

Newcastle signed Jamal Lewis in the offseason to take over duties at left-back. He’s been the primary starter there this season and the youngster has been inconsistent. With winger Matt Ritchie as the only other option behind him, the Magpies could make a move for one of these three left-backs in January.

Two of the potential targets would be making returns to Tyneside. Both out of contract this summer and out of the mix at their current clubs, Danny Rose and Jetro Willems have been mentioned as possible additions. Each player featured for Newcastle on loan last season with Rose arriving in January to replace Willems after a season-ending injury.

Both players are qualified and put in good shifts for the club during 2019-20, but Willems is definitely the preferred option between the two. He has stated he would like a return to the club in the past, has a great relationship on the pitch with Allan Saint-Maximin, and is four years younger than Rose. He was also the more impactful performer for the Magpies.

The other name being thrown about is Manchester United’s Brandon Williams. The 20-year-old has made one Premier League appearance for Man Utd and will likely head out on loan to get some match time during the second half of the season.

While Williams may develop into an exciting player, it would make more sense for the club to try and back the 22-year-old Lewis with a more experienced option.
