Newcastle United have not defeated Liverpool since 2015, winless in seven straight.
Newcastle United suffered a 2-0 defeat at the hands of Manchester City on Boxing Day and will bounce back quickly with a matchup vs. Liverpool on Wednesday. Unfortunately, success against the Reds has been hard to come by for Newcastle recently.
The last time Newcastle United took all three points from Liverpool was back in December 2015. On that day, the Magpies picked up a 2-0 win courtesy of an own goal from Martin Skrtel and a tally from Georginio Wijnaldum, who moved from Newcastle to Liverpool after that season.
After that victory, Newcastle came away with a draw on each side of their relegation season. Papiss Cisse and Jack Colback scored second-half goals to secure a 2-2 result in April 2016 and Joselu picked up an equalizer in a 1-1 draw in October 2017.
Since then, the series matchup has been all Liverpool. In their title-winning campaign last season, both matches finished 3-1 in favor of Jurgen Klopp’s side.
The 2018-19 season saw two very different matches that both ended with Liverpool victories. On Boxing Day, Newcastle United were blown out, 4-0. Then, the second matchup of the season ended 3-2 with Divock Origi scoring a last-minute goal to give the Reds the win.
The success over that seven-match unbeaten run by Liverpool is nothing new vs. Newcastle. Since 1996, the Magpies have only won seven matches out of over 40 matches in that span. The all-time series goes back to the 1800s with the first of their 179 matches taking place in 1893 (a blowout loss for Newcastle).
