In the third round of the 2020-21 FA Cup, Newcastle United will look to upset Arsenal.

As the 2020-21 Premier League season heads towards its Festive Fixtures, yesterday marked the FA Cup Third Round draw. Newcastle United enjoyed a quarterfinal run last season, after years of shortcomings. If they want similar success in 2021, they will need to score an upset in their first match.

Steve Bruce’s side will face Arsenal in the third round. Last season, the Gunners were able to win the 2019-20 competition. They defeated Manchester City, who bounced Newcastle, in the semifinals before securing a 2-0 victory over Chelsea. Pierre Emerick-Aubameyang scored a brace to cancel out Christian Pulisic’s early goal.

Arsenal will surely enter the home matchup as the favorites. But, while the London side has the status of reigning champions and an extensive pedigree, Newcastle United are far from longshots against this year’s Arsenal side.

At the moment, Newcastle actually sits one place above Arsenal on the Premier League table. Mikel Arteta’s side only has one win in their last five EPL matches and resides in a shocking 14th position in the league.

A lot can change between now and the third round matchup scheduled for 1/9 at the Emirates. But, Newcastle should enter this match confident that they can score the upset. This season, with adjustments due to COVID-19, there will be no replays which could benefit the Magpies, too.

Newcastle United have won the FA Cup six times. Unfortunately, the last time they lifted the trophy was back in 1955 and they haven’t made the FA Cup Final since the 1998-99 tournament.
