During the 2019/20 Premier League season, Newcastle United picked up two wins over Southampton.

Newcastle United will face a surprising Southampton side on Friday at St. Mary’s Stadium. The Magpies will be hoping to extend their success from last season against Ralph Hasenhüttl’s side. Newcastle took all six points from the Saints during the 2019/20 campaign.

Playing at home, Martin Dubravka kept a clean sheet in the first half with a pair of big saves. But, Danny Ings would open the scoring shortly after the break.

Steve Bruce made a move just ahead of the hour-mark to bring Andy Carroll on for Joelinton. The veteran striker assisted on Jonjo Shelvey’s goal to level things. Federico Fernandez scored the winner in the 87th minute. Unfortunately, while winning the match, Newcastle would lose Allan Saint-Maximin to a hamstring injury late in the action.

So’ton’s Moussa Djenepo was shown a red card in the 27th minute and Newcastle was awarded a penalty in the 44th minute. But, Matt Ritchie couldn’t convert the penalty and the Magpies struggled to capitalize on the man advantage.

Then, Saint-Maximin had a shining moment as he stole the ball and ran in on goal and buried the chance. It wasn’t a picture-perfect match.

All-time Series

Newcastle United are unbeaten in six straight matches vs. Southampton, pushing their record to 40 wins, 37 losses, and 23 draws in the all-time series. Before that position six-match run by Newcastle, they only won one of eight matches vs. the Saints. The longest winning streak for either side in the series is just three matches.
