With over 100 appearances for the club, this former Newcastle United starter can’t even make the bench in 2020.

Since the 2016/17 season in the Championship, Newcastle United has largely had the same first-choice player at right-back. But, with over 100 total appearances for the club, this defender isn’t even making the bench in 2020 for the Magpies.

DeAndre Yedlin joined Newcastle from Spurs in August 2016 after spending the prior season on loan with Sunderland. The speedy American right-back started 21 matches league matches in his first year with the club and started 30 matches in the Premier League during the 2017/18 campaign.

He was the first-choice option again under Rafa Benitez in 2018/19, but he battled injuries and the emergence of Javier Manquillo last season. He would finish with only ten EPL starts under Steve Bruce and reportedly wanted a move away from the club.

In 2020, 27-year-old Yedlin has only made the bench in one Premier League match but didn’t appear in that match vs. Spurs. He did start in two of Newcastle’s Carabao Cup matches.

Now, Jacob Murphy has started back-to-back matches at right-back/wing-back and Javier Manquillo is available to back him up. Emil Krafth is also in the mix and Yedlin, who has more than 60 caps for the USMNT, appears to be the odd man out.

With his contract expiring after the season, Yedlin’s time with the Magpies appears to be heading towards an unceremonious end.  He could be heading back to Major League Soccer in the United States or find a new home in Europe. But, it doesn’t appear Yedlin is in the future plans at Newcastle United.
