Newcastle United have the fifth-highest odds of being relegated to the Championship this season.

Newcastle United are currently six points clear of the bottom three as they sit 13th in the table with seven points from their opening five games. The Magpies picked up their points against West Ham (2-0), Tottenham (1-1), and Burnley (3-1).

However, those results have done little to convince the computer at FiveThirtyEight that they should be excluded from the relegation discussion.

According to the online prediction platform, Newcastle United’s relegation odds stand at 25%, which is the fifth-highest percentage in the Premier League. Only Burnley (33%), Sheffield United (45%), Fulham (56%), and West Brom (63%) are at greater risk in the FiveThirtyEight calculations.

The heavy defeat to Manchester United (1-4) last weekend, as well as the shocking 0-3 hammering from Brighton a month ago, have set the Toon back in these calculations. Newcastle United are predicted to finish the season in 16th place with 41 points – just five points above the drop.

That predicted point total would place the Magpies 12 points behind Wolverhampton, who are predicted to finish in tenth, 17 points behind Aston Villa in ninth, 20 points off of the top six, and a whopping 42 points behind league winners Manchester City.

These predictions are interesting to look at, but the numbers are constantly changing based on the results each weekend, sometimes drastically.

Newcastle United have been associated with high relegation odds on this platform since their promotion to the top flight four seasons ago, so this is nothing new.

If Steve Bruce comes to his senses and deploys his best possible team, which includes the dynamic trio of Ryan Fraser, Miguel Almiron, Allan Saint-Maximin, then things can certainly take a different twist.

Time will tell how things will play out, but in this early stage of the season Newcastle United are still viewed as underdogs in most games.
