Newcastle United set to make the right call regarding striker’s future

Newcastle United are expected to offer Dwight Gayle a new contract to keep him on Tyneside for a few more seasons.
Newcastle United have suffered tremendously under the Mike Ashley regime, but every now and then the executives makes some smart decisions. The latest move that earned plenty of praise among the Toon Army was the improved contract that was offered to and signed off by Allan Saint-Maximin.
That new deal will see the dynamic Frenchman double his wages, and his stay at St. James’ Park has also been extended by one season until the summer of 2026.
Prior to that, Newcastle United have convinced multiple players to sit down and agree to new deals, such as Matty Longstaff, Javier Manquillo, Matt Ritchie, and Jonjo Shelvey, to name a few.
According to a recent report from Football Insider, next up on that list is striker Dwight Gayle. The 30-year-old will be out of action until December due to a knee injury he picked up in preseason.
However, Gayle impressed the coaching staff and fans with his performances in the second half of last season as he found the back of the net four times.
Gayle is seen as an average Premier League striker, but a lethal finisher in the Championship, and that is why he was loaned out to West Brom in Rafa Benitez’s final season in charge of Newcastle United.
Gayle fought for his place in the team last term and made 20 appearances, with 10 of those appearances coming from the opening whistle.
Seeing that Yoshinori Muto has been loaned out to Eibar, and Andy Carroll is yet to find the back of the net for the Toon since his arrival last summer, Gayle is the team’s best option to get some goals after Callum Wilson.
Gayle’s presence on the bench provides that extra bit of assurance that a decent scoring option is available for Newcastle United if Wilson is ever sidelined with an injury.
Gayle developed great chemistry with Jonjo Shelvey, Miguel Almiron, and Allan Saint-Maximin last season, and those partnerships will only benefit him even more during this campaign. It all comes down to whether or not Gayle is willing to accept that role going forward, though.
He will have plenty of suitors in the Championship this summer, especially since he would be available for free, but Newcastle United give him the opportunity to compete in the top tier of English football.
It is a big decision for him to make, but fans should at least be happy that the front office is willing to extend his stay at the club.
