Fans should not be surprised if this Newcastle United player suits up for England in the near future.
Newcastle United have a few players who have suited up for England a handful of times, such as Jonjo Shelvey and Callum Wilson, but another name could soon be added to that list.
That player is none other than Karl Darlow. That might sound crazy to some of you, but the idea was floated around by the commentators during the Tottenham and Burnley games.
England’s greatest flaw as a team is between the sticks. It has been a process of trial and error for Gareth Southgate as the keepers he select have failed to impress with the Three Lions.
With Martin Dubravka now expected to be out until December, which is a major blow for Newcastle United, Darlow will have an extended period of time as the main man guarding the goal at St. James’ Park.
Darlow’s overall record as a starter in the Premier League consists of six victories, nine draws, and eight defeats. In his 23 top flight appearances, Darlow has six clean sheets to his name.
So far this season, Darlow claimed a clean sheet on opening day, he leads the Premier League in saves (20), and has conceded five goals – a tally which should be lower, but the back line in front of him collapsed against Brighton in seven minutes.
Darlow made some impressive saves against Burnley, but his best performance so far came against Tottenham. Harry Kane and company were left frustrated as Darlow swatted away shot after shot. It is worth mentioning that Spurs created 23 chances in that game, but only scored once and only earned a point.
As Darlow continues to grow in confidence, he could be a legitimate option for Southgate to consider, especially just to add more depth in that position.
With big games against Manchester United, Wolverhampton, Everton, Southampton, and Chelsea coming up, Darlow can really show what he is made of against quality opponents.
