Newcastle United came away with zero goals from their two matches vs. Burnley in the 2019-20 season.

Newcastle United will host Burnley on Saturday at St. James’ Park, looking for their first Premier League win since opening week. But, recent history indicates that the Magpies might have a tough time picking up three points against Sean Dyche’s club. We look back on the clubs’ two matchups last season.

12/14/19: Burnley 1, Newcastle United 0

In a season where there were definitely some disappointing performances, this one was definitely towards the top. Without Allan Saint-Maximin and Jonjo Shelvey due to injury, Christian Atsu and Sean Longstaff did anything but impress as their replacements.

Chris Wood smashed home a header off of a corner kick for the lone goal and Andy Carroll and Dwight Gayle had big misses for the Magpies. Gayle’s came in the 81st minute when Joelinton played a perfect ball from the right wing and the shot from close-range went wide.

Steve Bruce switched up the formation to a more-attacking 4-4-2, with Dwight Gayle joining Joelinton up top, and saw his side register 21 shots on the day. But, there were no goals to be scored for Newcastle United.

It was the second time they were blanked by the Clarets last season. The draw for Newcastle was followed by a win in the FA Cup and the EPL before the league was shut down due to COVID-19.
