Newcastle’s previous results in the League Cup’s Round of 16

Newcastle United have a losing record in their previous18 matches in the League Cup’s Round of 16.

After a blowout win last week over Morecambe FC, Newcastle United are into the Round of 16 in the EFL Cup. This is the club’s first trip to the fourth round since the 2016-17 season. They lost their second-round matchup three straight seasons before picking up back-to-back wins to start the tournament this season.

Ahead of Wednesday’s match vs. Newport County AFC, we look back at some of the key stats, memorable matches, and other fun facts from Newcastle United’s 18 previous appearances in the League Cup’s Round of 16.

Record

Newcastle United are 8-10 in the previous matches at this stage of the tournament. In 1994-95, the Magpies needed a replay win to advance.

Notable Results

1976-77: Manchester United 7, Newcastle United 2

In their third-ever appearance in the Round of 16, Newcastle United suffered their widest defeat. After blowing out Newcastle, Manchester United got blanked 3-0 by Everton, who went on to lose the final to Aston Villa in the second replay.

1995-96: Newcastle United 1, Liverpool FC 0

A 77th-minute goal from Steve Watson was enough to push Newcastle past the Reds. Watson had replaced Les Ferdinand earlier in the second half at Anfield.

2006-07: Newcastle United 2 (5), Watford 2 (4)

Danny Shittu put Watford ahead in added extra time before Scott Parker equalized in the 118th minute. Only James Milner missed his spot shot for Glenn Roeder’s Magpies on the way to a 5-4 victory in PKs.

2010-11: Arsenal 4, Newcastle United 0

An own goal by Tim Krul, after a poor header from defender Ryan Taylor, in first-half stoppage time set the tone for the second half of this one. Theo Walcott scored a brace and Nicklas Bendtner added another in the blowout loss for Chris Hughton’s side.

2011-12: Blackburn Rovers 4, Newcastle United 3

Danny Guthrie and Yohan Cabaye scored twice in stoppage time to force added extra time vs. Blackburn Rovers. The clubs would each score a goal before Gael Givet headed home the winner for Blackburn, ending an 11-match unbeaten run by Newcastle.

2013-14: Manchester City 2, Newcastle United 0

This match entered added extra time scoreless, but Alvaro Negredo and Edin Dzeko beat Tim Krul. The Magpies actually held the edge of shots and shots on target, despite getting shutout by Romanian goalkeeper Costel Pantilimon.

2016-17: Newcastle United 6, Preston North End 0

In their most recent appearance in the Round of 16, Newcastle United got braces from Aleksandar Mitrovic and Mo Diame, plus a goal each from Matt Ritchie and Ayoze Perez to hammer Preston. This match came during Newcastle’s season in the Championship and fans contested that the club shouldn’t try to get results in the cup competitions, but rather focus on promotion.
