Newcastle United upset Spurs in London last season before losing at home.

Entering last season, Newcastle United had lost four straight matches and six of their last eight vs. Tottenham. But, Steve Bruce’s side was able to split the season series vs. Spurs in 2019/20. Before they kick off this weekend, we look at the two matches between NUFC and Tottenham last campaign.

Newcastle United overcame injuries to Allan Saint-Maximin and Jamaal Lascelles, 17 shots from Spurs, and limited offense to secure an upset win at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Bruce set up his squad to defend deep and try to withstand the attacking pressure from the hosts. With good defense and a couple of key saves from Martin Dubravka, they were able to blank Spurs.

Going the other direction, Joelinton got a chance on the counter and tapped the ball home. It was a much-improved performance from the striker after having an especially rough go at it vs. Norwich City.

It wasn’t pretty, but it was a key away win and ended Tottenham’s winning streak vs. the Magpies.

7/15/20: Spurs 3, Newcastle United 1

In one of their matches during Project Restart, Newcastle United suffered a 3-1 defeat at St. James’ Park. The result marked Jose Mourinho’s first win at Newcastle’s stadium.

Son opened the scoring before Matt Ritchie pulled things level for the Magpies. But, Harry Kane would take advantage of a Jamaal Lascelles-less Newcastle back line and scored a brace to give Spurs the win.

Unlike their win vs. the club earlier in the season, Newcastle United actually controlled a lot of the action on the ball, but they were not able to finish their chances when they presented themselves.
