With Newcastle United’s signing of Ryan Fraser, they now have an explosive trio to push the ball forward on the counter-attack.

Yesterday, Newcastle United officially announced the signing of former Bournemouth duo Callum Wilson and Ryan Fraser, both on long-term deals. While Wilson will assume the role of the first-choice striker, Fraser could have a massive impact alongside the duo of Allan Saint-Maximin and Miguel Almiron, especially when the club can drive the ball forward on the break.

While it’s yet to be seen how Steve Bruce will set the team up this season, the tactics will likely be similar to last year. Focus on defense first and try to beat clubs on the counter. The trio of Fraser, Saint-Maximin, and Almiron is built for that.

In his first season with the club, Saint-Maximin finished toward the top of the lists for dribbles attempted and dribbles completed in the Premier League. Since his arrival, Miggy is always willing to use his pace to push the ball forward. For newcomer Ryan Fraser, he’s also known for his quickness and dribbling ability.

With Fraser and ASM opposite one another on the wings and Almiron playing in the middle, the club’s counter-attack will be explosive and will help create goals for each other and Wilson up top. It’s the type of personnel that can change the game on the break and will help the club steal points when they struggle to hold a lot of possession. Opposing Premier League clubs will need to be very wary of leaving space for the Magpies to get out and run on the break in 2020/21.
