Newcastle United will need help up top, especially to start this season, and this player could step up.

Entering Newcastle United’s season opener on 9/12, there is a lot of uncertainty at striker. Coming off a season where that position failed to produce, the Magpies have added no new player there.

Also, they’ve lost Dwight Gayle to injury for the next few months, Joelinton is nowhere to be found (maybe COVID-19 quarantined?), and Yoshinori Muto is seeking a transfer away. Andy Carroll has scored in both friendlies in the preseason thus far, but he’s 31 years old and injury-prone. Could another option up top for the club be playing with the U-23s right now?

The goalscorer against Hartlepool yesterday, U-23 forward Elias Sorensen has been considered the club’s most promising striker over the last few years. There were calls for him to step up to the first team as he lit up the U-23s and the senior squad struggled for production from players like Joselu or Joelinton. Sorensen had a chance to play in preseason friendlies last summer and had some positive moments.

The 20-year-old hasn’t found any success on his two loan stints, Blackpool and Carlisle United, unlike his production in the Premier League 2 or U-18 Premier League. He scored ten goals in PL 2 back in 2018/19 after scoring 12 goals in the U-18 PL the year before. On the international level, he has scored in all three matches he has played for Denmark’s U-21 and U-20 side.

Now, without any depth up top, Newcastle could give the Danish Geordie a chance to show what he can do with the big boys. This article isn’t to say he should become the first-choice starter or that the club doesn’t need to pursue other strikers. But, it does advocate for Steve Bruce to give him a chance off the bench or in cup competitions to prove himself and give Carroll and Joelinton some time to rest their legs.
