Andy Carroll’s current form is important for Newcastle United
With Newcastle United needing someone to step up at striker, Andy Carroll’s looking like he may be able to answer the call.
Newcastle United struggled for production at striker last season. It was the number one position that needed an upgrade this summer and to this point, there has not been a new striker joining the squad. Even worse, Dwight Gayle, the most productive number nine last season, is out for months with an injury he picked up earlier this week. With Joelinton still missing from the preseason scene, Newcastle’s other striker has stepped up so far.
Andy Carroll has now scored in both friendly wins for Newcastle United, including a rather impressive finish vs. Crewe Alexandra. While preseason friendlies are not a great indicator of Premier League expectations, the veteran staying healthy and active on the pitch while finding the net is big for the Magpies.
Last season, he played well as a substitute or rotational starter in his first season back with the club. Carroll proved that he can still be a force in the air to win the ball and central defenders are in for a physical battle anytime he has his back to goal. While he didn’t find the net, he finished tied for the most assists in the Premier League for NUFC.
It would be a mistake for Newcastle United to rely on a 31-year-old Carroll as their primary target man for an entire season. But, with limited options right now for Steve Bruce, it’s great to see Carroll playing well and ready to score some goals.
