Newcastle United should consider making a shock move for Huddersfield’s main man.

Newcastle United have been dealt a few blows, both internally and externally, in their second week of preseason. The Magpies displayed some good form in their 3-0 victory over Crewe Alexandra, but they lost Dwight Gayle to an injury in the process.

In addition, Martin Dubravka has been ruled out for anywhere between six to eight weeks with a heel injury that occurred in training. To pile on more bad news, Newcastle United will most likely miss out on Callum Wilson due to the £30m asking price set by Bournemouth.

So, where do the Magpies go from here? Working with a limited budget certainly complicates matters, but here is one avenue that would add quality to the squad and save an already conservative front office some money.

Karlan Grant

The ideal situation would be to land a striker with a proven record in the Premier League, but that requires spending the big bucks.

With the support of Jonjo Shelvey, Miguel Almiron, and Allan Saint-Maximin, a young, confident, and dynamic attacking player can find success in the final third.

Karlan Grant, 22, was directly involved in 23 goals for Huddersfield Town in the Championship last season – scoring 19 and providing four assists.

Seeing that the Terriers only scored 52 goals last season, Grant single-handedly contributed to 44% of the squad’s total output.

Grant has some exposure to the top flight as he joined Huddersfield Town in the second half of the 2018-19 campaign, in which they were relegated, but he managed to score three goals in 13 appearances while being utilized primarily as a winger.

He was the main man on the front line last term, though, and he did a phenomenal job. Newcastle United need a player who has the pace and technical skills to take on defenders near goal, and effectively link up with Almiron or Saint-Maximin in give-and-go situations.

This signing would come with some risk, but based on Grant’s numbers and his potential, the Magpies could land a future star.

There is no indication as to how much he would cost, but his price tag would surely be much more affordable than that of Callum Wilson.

The only Premier League club currently keeping tabs on Grant are newcomers West Brom. Newcastle United would blow them out of the water if they joined the race because of their fans, the stadium, and stability in the Premier League.

The club’s form is not always great, but the Magpies are now considered a stable mid-table side.

Next. No way NUFC will spend £18m on this player. dark
