Newcastle United are reportedly the favorites to add Conor Gallagher on loan from Chelsea.

With no takeover infusion of funds expected, Newcastle United will need to rely on doing frugal business to improve the squad this offseason. Cheap transfers and free moves will be desired, while loan deals may also benefit the Magpies. According to Ian Abrahams of TalkSport, Newcastle United are the top candidates to add this playmaking midfielder from one of the Premier League’s top-six sides.

Chelsea’s Conor Gallagher appears to be squarely on the Newcastle radar as the club looks to add more creativity and production to a squad that struggled to score in 2019/20. While the 20-year-old is unproven in the Premier League, he’s established quite the reputation as a game-changer in the second division.

This past season, he played the first half of the campaign with Charlton Athletic, scoring six goals and adding four assists. In January, he made the swap over to Swansea City, where he went on to tally seven assists. He played the full 90 minutes in both of the Swans’ matches vs. Brentford in the EFL Playoffs.

If Newcastle United are able to bring him in, they would be adding an energetic player that has an eye for setting up his teammates and isn’t afraid to run at defenders while on the ball. Gallagher could be a perfect fit to come off the bench as a number ten for Miguel Almiron, or get some starts at the position with Miggy playing out wide. He could also play as a more traditional central midfielder and drive the ball forward from there.

He won’t be an everyday starter for the Magpies by any means, but Conor Gallagher appears to be ready to step up his game and his playmaking ability would be a welcome sight for Newcastle United supporters.
