While Said Benrahma is rightfully getting the headlines, Newcastle United should make a move for another Brentford star.

Yesterday, Fulham won the EFL Championship Play-off Final over Brentford, scoring twice in added extra time. On Twitter, supporters of different Premier League clubs rejoiced as they want their respective side to sign Brentford star Said Benrahma. While I think Newcastle United should absolutely throw their hat in that ring, there is another player for the Bees that should be on the radar for the Magpies.

Ollie Watkins led Brentford in goals this season, finishing with 25 in regular season play. The 24-year-old forward scored ten goals in each of the prior two seasons with the club after leaving Exeter City. Ollie won the EFL Young Player of the Year award back in the 2016/17 season with Exeter.

Leeds United are rumored to be leading the chase for Watkins, but Newcastle United should strongly considering paying his rumored £18 million release clause. That’s the type of deal Mike Ashley shouldn’t oppose as it doesn’t break his bank and would give him resale value.

No, I don’t think that Watkins steps in and becomes Alan Shearer or even just the first-choice striker. But, he is someone that can score goals, which is something Newcastle United doesn’t have enough of. While his experience comes in the second division, he has good speed, movement off the ball, and youth. You can mix him into the striking rotation and primarily have him play as a substitute and run at tired legs with his ability as a converted winger.
