Newcastle must beat Arsenal in race for free-scoring Dutchman

Newcastle United need to secure the services of a top striker this summer if they aim to be a top ten club.

Newcastle United truly are in a limbo as a result of this delayed takeover. Mike Ashley wants out of the club, but he might have to prepare to spend some money once more as the Magpies need to prepare for next season.

Newcastle United were often selected as a team that was expected to finish in the bottom three by pundits, but that has not been the case. With four games remaining, Newcastle United are 15 points clear of the relegation zone and six points shy of the top ten.

The Toon Army is hoping the takeover goes through in order to break this unambitious narrative at St. James’ Park. Newcastle United have some talented players they can build a solid team around, but they must act quickly.

Of all the players Newcastle United have been linked with this summer, the best transfer target the scouting department has identified is Wout Weghorst. The Dutchman is a free-scoring striker who has found the back of the net 33 times in 66 Bundesliga appearances with Wolfsburg.

In addition to his impressive record in front of goal, Weghorst has also provided 10 assists for his teammates over the last two seasons. In total, the 27-year-old target man has been directly involved in 39% of Wolfsburg’s league goals since 2018.

With the support of Miguel Almiron and Allan Saint-Maximin in the final third, there is no doubt that Weghorst would succeed in the Premier League. The striker went on record in an interview for German media outlet BILD in which he said “I can deliver.”

The Magpies are screaming for a confident striker who can score with both feet and is an aerial threat. Arsenal are also interested in signing Weghorst, though.

The Dutchman, who is worth £35m, wants to play in the Premier League, and securing his services might simply come down to who acts first.

Newcastle United have also been linked with Alfredo Morelos (Rangers) and Odsonne Edouard (Celtic), but Weghorst should be their top priority this summer. Landing a striker with his scoring record and confidence would be massive for the club.
