In November, Newcastle United struggled on the road in a loss to Aston Villa.

Newcastle United returned to the Premier League with a 3-0 win over Sheffield United on Sunday. They won’t have a lot of time to revel in the victory as they have a quick turnaround with another home fixture coming midweek against Aston Villa. Before that matchup at St. James’ Park, we look back at their previous fixture vs. the Villains this season.

Recap

The Magpies were in solid form with back-to-back wins, but this Monday Night Football matchup was anything but solid for Newcastle United.

Around the half-hour mark, DeAndre Yedlin let Jack Grealish get behind him and when the ball was played over the top to the Villa star, he clearly pushed him down. The foul gave Villa a free-kick on the edge of the box and Conor Hourihane buried a free kick after touching it slightly to Grealish to give him an angle around the wall.

Another foul of Grealish, the most fouled player in the Premier League, near the box gave Villa their second goal. Federico Fernandez took down Grealish and earned a yellow card. Hourihane’s free kick from the corner of the area found Anwar El Ghazi, as well as a couple of other Villa players, behind a poorly held line from Newcastle and he turned it in for the insurance goal.
