Match recap
Newcastle United went on the road and did something that no other club has done since Sheffield United was in League One: Beat the Blades at Bramall Lane by two or more goals.
Two of Newcastle United’s best players this season scored the goals in the 2-0 win. Allan Saint-Maximin rose up to head home a Javier Manquillo cross for the opening score in the first half.
With Sheffield United pressing for an equalizer, Jonjo Shelvey scored an unconventional goal in the 70th minute. Just beyond mid-pitch, Andy Carroll headed the ball to an onrushing Shelvey. Sheffield defenders didn’t converge, believing the play would be flagged offside. Per the officiating policy, the flag stayed down to allow the play to continue. Shelvey buried a shot past a less than locked in Dean Henderson and VAR confirmed the play to be onside and the goal stood.
