We predict which Newcastle United player will end the season with the most EPL assists.

Newcastle United have struggled to score goals this season and that has left the club with some odd assist leaders, too. As we await the return of the Premier League, we take a look at who might finish this season as the club’s top playmaker in the EPL.

Where we stand

Christian Atsu, Andy Carroll: 3

Joelinton, Jetro Willems: 2

Seven players tied at 1

Durim Halimi: Joelinton

The club’s record signing has disappointed in terms of his scoring record, but there is no denying his admirable work rate. The Brazilian has two assists this season, and he has two assists in the FA Cup as well. Steve Bruce has been trying to take the pressure off the young striker by playing him out wide, which is a role he excelled in while at Hoffenheim.

As a result, I expect Joelinton to be much more involved in the Magpies’ attack and set up big plays for some of the speedsters around him, such as Miguel Almiron and Allan Saint-Maximin. Joelinton is clever with the ball at his feet, and his ability to hold the ball up will give teammates times to run into open lanes to create meaningful chances.

Carson A. Merk: Miguel Almiron

The fact that the assist co-leaders are a substitute winger and a 31-year-old backup striker is troubling and indicative of the struggle Newcastle United has had in the attack.

I think Joelinton and Allan Saint-Maximin will be better in front of goal down the stretch and that bodes well for Almiron’s assist numbers. Also, Steve Bruce could continue to deploy him in his best-suited role as a number ten. If that happens, he will be able to serve as the primary playmaker with three quality attackers nearby.
