With Jonjo Shelvey currently leading the way, who will end this season as the top goalscorer for Newcastle United?

The Premier League season will return in just a couple of short weeks. While Newcastle United are planted in the middle of the table, there will be some storylines to watch down the stretch. One of the most intriguing will be the battle for top scorer this Premier League season, a position currently held by midfielder Jonjo Shelvey.

Last year’s top goalscorer: Ayoze Perez, 12 goals

Where we stand

Jonjo Shelvey: 5

Eight players tied at 2

Four players tied at 1

Durim Halimi: Miguel Almiron

Jonjo Shelvey is leading the way for the Magpies at the moment, but Miguel Almiron has started to turn the corner. The Paraguayan international scored two brilliant goals against Crystal Palace and Wolverhampton, and he is on fire in the FA Cup.

Steve Bruce has granted Almiron more flexibility by allowing him to cut inside more frequently, which is where he performs best. With a favorable schedule coming up to conclude the season, it would not surprise me to see Almiron score six or seven more goals.

Carson A. Merk: Allan Saint-Maximin

Most would agree that the French winger has been the most enjoyable player to watch this season for the Magpies. With his skillful dribbling, non-stop energy, and quick pace, Saint-Maximin is must-see TV.

Right now, he sits on two goals in the league. But, he’s also battled hamstring injuries throughout the season. Now, after having three months to rest those crucial muscles, ASM will come back full force and bag at least a few more goals.
