After reportedly excelling in training, Andy Carroll might be key for Newcastle United when the season resumes.
When play was halted in the Premier League, Newcastle United were tied for the fewest goals in the league. Primary striker Joelinton has struggled mightily in his first Premier League season and Andy Carroll has battled injuries in his return to the Magpies. But, with the lengthy delay in EPL action, the latter has fought back to full health and looks ready to make an impact down the stretch.
Steve Bruce raved about Carroll to The Star and it seems that the veteran target man has been impressive since being back at training last month. A quality run of matches for Carroll when the season resumes would be massive for the player and the club.
For the Magpies, they’d be getting quality returns from an inexpensive player at the position they’ve struggled at most. His experience has helped him become Newcastle’s co-leader in assists this season in the Premier League and when healthy, he is a lot to deal with for a central defender. If Joelinton can’t get on track, they will have an alternative option ready and waiting.
From Carroll’s perspective, if he proves he can stay healthy and contribute in the Premier League, he could earn a new deal with NUFC, either by the club’s choice or by him reaching milestones to trigger an automatic extension. If he plays well and doesn’t stay with Newcastle for some reason, another Premier League side could see value in the 31-year-old.
With benefits for both Carroll and Steve Bruce’s side if he plays well, let’s hope the striker can keep his momentum from training going when Newcastle returns to face Sheffield United.
