Newcastle United target hints he’ll be leaving his current club
Willian’s situation at Chelsea indicates a move to Newcastle United might be more likely.
Early on during this round of takeover rumors, Newcastle United were linked with Chelsea winger Willian. The Brazilian’s contract expires after this season and recent comments from him insinuate an extension isn’t likely with the Blues.
Speaking with Esporte Interativo, Willian explained that Chelsea are not prepared to meet his contract demands. The club are only willing to give him two more years with the London club while the winger wants that number at three. He described the situation as “difficult” and said he doesn’t think the club will concede to giving him what he’s hoping for. While an extension beyond the end of June is likely, anything beyond that seems unlikely for Willian and the Blues.
For Newcastle United, that allows for an easier, more likely acquisition of Willian. They’d be adding a player with more than five assists in each of the last three Premier League seasons, this one included. His arrival would give the new-era of Newcastle United a winger that can make everyone else better in the attack and also talented dribbling the ball and on free kicks.
While there is the expected increase transfer budget, a move like this would only cost the weekly wages. Would Newcastle United be more comfortable offering a three-year deal to a 31-year-old Willian than Chelsea?
It’s hard to tell because we don’t have any previous knowledge of this ownership group’s preference for signings. But, if that extra year was a deal-breaker in adding a proven high-level performer in the EPL, I’d speculate that they’d be willing to make that compromise.
