Recently linked with the striker, Newcastle United should not pursue Gonzalo Higuain.

Outside of players on the wing, strikers seem to be the players most commonly linked to Newcastle United. Figuring out the number nine will be a top priority for the new ownership group. But, not every big-name striker that’s linked to the club would make sense for the Magpies. Juventus target man Gonzalo Higuain is one of the players that Newcastle should avoid signing for big money.

The 32-year-old striker is back with Juventus after spells with AC Milan and Chelsea. In 23 Serie A matches, Higuain has scored five goals to go with four assists. He had exceptional runs with Real Madrid and Napoli before a 2016 move to Juventus. He also has more than 30 goals for the Argentine national team.

Higuain has experience in top leagues, including the EPL, but he’s definitely beyond his prime. A major concern would be the possibility of him becoming complacent at Newcastle United. He’s had to make a big effort at Juve to get his weight under control and he could lack motivation if things don’t go according to plan with the Magpies.

It’s also rumored that he could join his brother with D.C. United in Major League Soccer. If he still had the ambition to star at the top level, he wouldn’t be linked with a transfer to the United States.

While a new striker should definitely on the wish list for Amanda Staveley and the other prospective owners, signing an aging player like Gonzalo Higuain, on a full deal or loan, doesn’t make sense for long-term success on Tyneside.
