Newcastle United are known for having some of the most passionate fans in England, but the Magpies might have to play without that tremendous support next season.

So much activity is taking place behind the scenes at the Premier League and at Newcastle United. The Premier League is trying to formulate a proper way to finish the 2019-20 campaign, and they are also tasked with reviewing the potential takeover of Newcastle United.

The Magpies are waiting on the sideline for both decisions, although fans are primarily focused on ensuring the departure of Mike Ashley is confirmed. The review process is now entering its third week, and sources that better understand this process have stated that takeover approvals usually take between two and four weeks. Let’s hope we hear good news over the next few days.

Takeover talk aside for now, though, a new report claims the Premier League is now debating what its fan policy should be next season. Based on several reports over the last few weeks, league officials aim to finish this season by playing multiple games per day at neutral venues. For next season, however, the aforementioned report states that the front office is hoping teams can play in their own stadiums, but every game might be played behind closed doors.

Obviously, this decision would impact all 20 teams in the top flight and it would be a major blow for every club, but it would be devastating for Newcastle United. On one end, if Project Zebra is approved and new owners take control of the club, the Toon Army would have to celebrate this great news in isolation away from St. James’ Park.

One can only imagine the electric atmosphere supporters would create in the stands at every home game. In addition, this proposed decision would serve as another obstacle for the incoming owners to tackle. With financial fair play regulations a ceiling is already placed on how much money Newcastle United can spend on players.

Financial fair play rules are centered on how much revenue a club has generated over a three-year period. Newcastle United failed to generate much revenue with Mike Ashley in charge, and now Prince Mohammed bin Salman, Amanda Staveley and the Reuben brothers might miss out on the potential revenue generated from 52,000 fans that attend home games and purchase club merchandise.

This does not mean Newcastle United would not have money to spend on players, but it would force the Magpies to wait even longer before they can pursue some of the top names in European football. Time will tell how things will play out over the next few months in England, but football fans, especially the Toon Army, should definitely keep an eye on any new developments from the Premier League regarding this decision.
