Newcastle United have been linked with the Manchester United winger.

As we continue to wait for the transfer to be completed, Newcastle United are being linked with more players to potentially sign this summer. Now, the Magpies are rumored to be interested in Manchester United’s Jesse Lingard.

Signing Lingard wouldn’t be the type of move to excite supporters this summer or improve the team in any considerable way. He’s not that young (27 years old) and his production has been dismal with zero goals or assists in 20 Premier League matches this season. Last campaign only saw him score four goals and add three assists in EPL play.

Newcastle United would be adding a player that doesn’t fit into their current squad and would be much more expensive than his ability merits. He’s not as electric out wide as Allan Saint-Maximin or Miguel Almiron and playing him as a number 10 would prevent Almiron from moving inside.

Not only does an eye test show that he’s not an exciting or necessary signing, but an analytical article in The Athletic highlighted his poor run of form for the past season and beyond. Also, it lists Newcastle United as not a good option for Lingard. His contract runs until June of next summer and his future doesn’t look bright at Manchester United, leading to speculation of a move to another Premier League club.

Adding Lingard would be simply making a signing to make a signing. He doesn’t fit the bill of what Newcastle need to add and the Magpies hierarchy should take a pass on bringing Lingard in.
