If Mauricio Pochettino is offered the job at Newcastle United, and accepts, he should recruit one of his former players from Tottenham to St. James’ Park.

A report from SkySports earlier this week claimed that the prospective owners of Newcastle United have identified Mauricio Pochettino as their top managerial target this summer. The same report goes on to say that the Argentine manager would receive a salary of £19m per season, which would make him the second-highest paid manager in the Premier League.

Being offered that kind of money, and having the opportunity to oversee an ambitious project from its inception will make it difficult for Pochettino to say no, but assumptions will not get us anywhere. We all have to wait and see how things play out over the next few weeks.

While we wait, however, there is nothing wrong with being preemptive and planning ahead. That being said, if Pochettino is offered the job at Newcastle United and he accepts, one of the first things he should do is recruit a talented midfielder from his former club. That midfielder being Lucas Moura.

Why Lucas Moura?

In my opinion, Moura is one of the most underrated midfielders in Europe that has played for top teams. The Brazilian international made a name for himself in France as a result of his stellar performances for PSG, and he quickly became an integral player for Tottenham.

The 27-year-old winger scored 46 goals and completed 37 assists across all competitions in five-and-a-half seasons with PSG. At Tottenham, the winger picked up right where he left off and he has a running tally of 23 goals and eight assists in 99 appearances with Spurs. Let’s also not forget his memorable performances for Tottenham in the Champions League last season, specifically his hat-trick against Ajax that sent Spurs to the final.

Moura is a dynamic player who can orchestrate attacks on his own, create big chances for himself and others around him, is capable of scoring goals in double figures, and he has some Premier League experience under his belt. He made 49 total appearances for Tottenham last season and he is clearly a player Pochettino perceives as reliable.

In addition, the arrival of Moura should bring the best out of Miguel Almiron. By playing Moura on the flank opposite of Allan Saint-Maximin, Almiron can finally be moved into his traditional number ten role behind the main striker. It was in this role that Almiron lit up the MLS and earned a reputation as a talented playmaker.

Almiron is playing with a lot of pressure on his shoulders as he is expected to be among the leading goal scorers for Newcastle United. The arrival of a quality winger like Moura would be great news for a player like Almiron, who needs a positional change to show his true colors.
