Louis Saha spent a forgettable half-season with Newcastle United on loan before playing another decade in the Premier League.

Recently, we’ve highlighted players that had less than memorable stints with Newcastle United like Xisco or Islam Slimani. Today, we take a look back at the loan spell that Louis Saha spent on Tyneside.

Saha had developed his way into the first team at FC Metz from the youth system. In January 1999, he joined Newcastle United on loan for the remainder of the Premier League season.

He scored his lone league goal in a 4-1 win over Coventry City, one of the five matches that he started for the Magpies.

The biggest contribution that manager Ruud Gillut got from the French international striker was in the FA Cup. After a scoreless draw in the fifth round proper vs. Blackburn Rovers, Saha scored the winning goal in a 1-0 replay victory for Newcastle. He was an unused sub in the quarterfinal and semifinal, but he didn’t make the matchday squad in the final loss vs. Manchester United.

After the season, he joined Fulham and made over 100 appearances for the club before extending his English soccer playing for Manchester United, Everton, Spurs, and Sunderland. He scored more than 80 goals in his time in the Premier League and won the title twice with Man. United playing for Sir Alex Ferguson.

Where Is He Now?

In 2013, Saha’s career came to an end after a short tenure with Lazio in Serie A. He scored zero goals in less than ten appearances. With his contract ending following the season, he retired.
