Philippe Coutinho has been linked with Newcastle United and a move back to the Premier League.
Newcastle United have reportedly made contact with the agent of Brazilian star Philippe Coutinho about a summer move. Bringing the attacking player back to the Premier League would be an expensive move and his form has dipped a bit since leaving England, but he would be an electrifying addition to the new-look Magpies.
Coutinho’s time with Liverpool ended on a sour note with rumors of a departure and a transfer request clouding the first half of the 2017-18 season. But, that doesn’t take away the impact he had on the Reds during his nearly six full years with the club. In just over 150 Premier League matches, he tallied 41 goals and 35 assists.
His huge-money move to Barcelona hasn’t paid off for the Spanish giants and they are considering selling him this summer. In two seasons, he has 21 total goals and 11 assists. Those are quality numbers, but the production doesn’t match his 160M+ price tag. Coutinho has played well on loan with Bayern Munich, scoring eight goals and assisting on six more in the Bundesliga. He added one goal and two assists in the Champions League.
If Newcastle United can get a deal done for Coutinho, they would be adding another attacking player with pace, aggressiveness, and high-level dribbling. It would also give Joelinton, if he sticks around, another Brazilian player in the dressing room to help him become more comfortable. Coutinho’s familiar with the league and will likely have a chip on his shoulder to prove that he is still one of the world’s elite footballers.
