Newcastle United are being linked with some notable players, but they will soon have sufficient funds to pay the release clause of one of Germany’s most talented strikers.

In the past few years, Newcastle United have been bargain hunters in the transfer market. The Magpies are known for scouting players on relegation-threatened teams, as well as youngsters who ride the bench at elite clubs and are looking for loan moves.

Today, though, the much anticipated takeover of Newcastle United is clearly shifting the club’s transfer policy. Over the last two weeks, Newcastle United have been linked to some notable players, such as Edinson Cavani, Willian, Dries Mertens, Nabil Fekir and Kalidou Koulibaly.

Whether or not these players would like to join Newcastle United is a different story, but the fact that they are on the incoming owners’ wishlist is a great sign. In order for the Magpies to truly become a competitive Premier League side Prince Mohammed bin Salman, Amanda Staveley and the Reuben brothers must strengthen the front line.

Former Newcastle United defender Warren Barton recently tweeted (see below) “Get him @NUFC,” referring to RB Leipzig striker Timo Werner, and I fully agree with Barton. The German international has a release clause of £52m, which is a fee the new owners could handle without a problem.

Liverpool are interested in securing Werner’s services this summer, but a new report from SkySports claims that the Reds are not willing to activate his release clause. That should definitely spark quick action from Newcastle United to, at the very least, try and hijack this deal.

It is worth noting that Werner’s release clause expires on June 15th, which would force the incoming owners to make this a top priority as soon as the Premier League approves the takeover. The 24-year-old has been with RB Leipzig since 2016 and has found the back of the net 88 times in 150 appearances for the club across all competitions, with 71 of his goals coming in Bundesliga action.

Werner is a dynamic striker and a clinical finisher that would provide a major boost to the Magpies’ attack. The timing of this transfer would be perfect as Newcastle United would land a striker who is about to enter his prime.

dark. Next. A common misconception about NUFC’s takeover

That being said, the takeover has not been completed, and Werner has not been linked with Newcastle United, but Warren Barton and I would be thrilled to see the 24-year-old added to the Magpies’ wishlist over the next few weeks.
