Jacob Murphy has failed to make an impact with Newcastle United and should be sold this summer.
With a lot of focus on the players that Newcastle United should add this summer, there will also be decisions made on what players should be shown the door in the offseason. One player that Newcastle United should definitely sell Jacob Murphy as the winger has failed to make an impact in his time with the club.
Murphy, who grew up a Newcastle United supporter, arrived in the summer of 2017 with Rafa Benitez looking for production out wide in the attack. In 25 Premier League matches that first season, Murphy notched just one goal and one assist.
He couldn’t break into the rotation for the first half of the 2018-19 campaign and went on loan with West Bromwich Albion in the Championship. Playing in the division he was most comfortable in, he wasn’t great for the Baggies either, finishing with two goals and one assist.
This season, he has been on loan with Sheffield Wednesday in the second division. Before the season was put on hold, he scored five league goals and added two assists.
At 25 years old, Murphy is not a finished product, but he hasn’t developed quickly enough and his final ball hasn’t matched the potency of his pace. His contract runs through the 2021 season and Newcastle United won’t want to wait until January of 2021 when he can begin negotiating with a new club. He won’t be a huge money transfer, but he should be able to secure the Magpies a decent chunk of change.
