Seydou Doumbia arrived on loan with an expectation to add goals, but he struggled to see the pitch for Newcastle United.

As we further our look at players that had less than memorable stints with Newcastle United, we revisit the loan spell by striker Seydou Doumbia.

Doumbia became a star with BSC Young Boys in Switzerland before continuing that trajectory in Russia with CSKA Moscow. He made a move to Roma but couldn’t establish himself. He went on loan back with Moscow in 2015 before joining Newcastle on loan in February of 2016. The deal reportedly had the option to become permanent.

The Ivory Coast international was on the bench for the first two matches after his arrival. He played 20 minutes in a blowout loss to Chelsea, which would end up being his longest appearance. In losses to Stoke City and Leicester City, he made substitute appearances of less than ten minutes.

He wouldn’t even appear in the squad for a Premier League match for the rest of the season. Obviously, Newcastle United didn’t pick up the option to buy and the Magpies were relegated. The very next season, Doumbia would move to FC Basel and scored 20 goals in the league and one in the Champions League.

Where Is He Now?

After a loan spell with Sporting CP and a stint with Girona, Doumbia last played for Sion in Switzerland. He made news for the wrong reasons last month when he was released due to allegedly refusing to take a pay cut during this COVID-19 pandemic. The 32-year-old had five goals and two assists before the Swiss season was suspended.
