Joining on a short-term loan, Patrick van Aanholt made a brief cameo in Newcastle United colors.

Today, we continue our look at players like Patrick Kluivert and Xisco that had little impact during their Newcastle United tenures. Let’s revisit the brief time that Dutch full-back Patrick van Aanholt played for the Magpies.

It was the 2009-10 season and Newcastle United were playing in the Championship after an 18th-place finish in 2008-09. The Magpies were in the midst of a battle at the top of the table with second-place Nottingham Forest. After an injury put Jose Enrique out of commission for a while, Newcastle United brought in Patrick van Aanholt on January 29th from Chelsea on a month-long loan.

Earlier in the season, van Aanholt was on loan with Coventry City in the Championship. The 19-year-old would arrive back in the second division and play in seven matches for Chris Hughton, going the full 90 minutes in six of those. The only match that he didn’t play the entire match was the only one that Newcastle lost during his stretch.

He would depart back to the Blues after a 2-1 win over Watford and Jose Enrique returned as the primary left-back at Newcastle United. van Aanholt definitely handled himself admirably as a teenager in the second division.
